Six Things To Remember When Making Felted Vessels

By Lelia Hall

Arts and crafts are fun activities to do in one's spare time. However, there are times when things do not turn out the way it was intended even when making items such as felted vessels. This article will provide six things to keep in mind when making such items, so that the most can be made out of the experience of crafting.

When it comes to felting, it is important to set aside as much time as possible. If a person has a project they want to do, but they have an appointment with the doctor in an hour, they would have to rush what they are doing. This can create a number of issue that one might not expect if they are trying to do things in a specific time frame. So it is important not to feel rushed.

One should also give themselves lots of room to work. Anything that is not waterproof should be moved out of the way if one is using wet felting. Even though one might try to use care when working, there is always the possibility that something could get wet. So a clear space is important not just for the wet technique, but for any technique that one might use just to be safe.

Use the right type of resists for the shape of vessel being made. There are different types of resists that one can use to create the item that they want. This can be anything from thick cardboard to a ball. The type of resist used will determine the shape and size of the container that one is making. So it is important to choose the best one for the article that one wants to make.

Also, having all of the right materials for the project at hand is a good idea so that everything can go as smoothly as possible. This means having all the supplies needed for using the wet technique or the needle technique of felting. This includes materials needed for the type of vessel that one wants to make and the colors to be used.

It is also important to be comfortable when having to work for a few hours. Some individuals like to do relaxing things like lighting candles or listening to music while they work. The lighting in a room is also important not only because one wants to see what they are doing, but it also helps to make things brighter and cheerful.

Another thing to be aware of is the type of clothing that one is wearing at the time. Any type of jewelry that can snag the plastic or other material that will be used should be removed. Some people wear an apron when using the wet technique to protect their clothing.

One should also remember that nothing will necessarily come out as perfect as one will want it to be. This does not mean that the method used is wrong or that things were done in the wrong way. Sometimes the making of art is not as predictable as one might expect. So it is best to just enjoy the process and expect the unexpected.
