Tracing The History Of Narrative Drawings

By Lelia Hall

Art works have been widely used for the last two centuries. Narrative drawings is a form of visual art basically used to narrate a story or portray what happened earlier or past events and ongoing story by use of pictures, sculptures, etc. This art derived its history from the stone age when the early man used drawings to give meaning to a scenario.

It call for or requires some knowledge to understand the meaning of this art. It is very complicated to read and understand the ancient pictures since they are usually not organized in a systematic way like the words on a page. They can unfold in many different perspectives at once.

The modern art has change all that these complexities came with. Every aspect of art is done systematically and in a chronological manner. You can easily capture the idea in the paintings and drawings. It also encompassed the use of quality graphics to come up with graphics and sculpture that make more sense.

Examples of these descriptive arts can be seen very early in the history of arts. They give evidences to certain occurrences that happened long back. Egyptian tombs and the Greek vase paintings are good examples from the 16th century that describe both the mythological and factual events.

Monoscenic narratives represent only a single scene. There is nothing like repetition of characters and there is only one action taking place. Depending on the artist's intention, landscape and portraits can be good examples of this type of art, other illustrations are the scenes from the Greek mythology whereby critical points in a story would be captured in a single scene.

The modern method of art representation has brought about more decent ways of narrating stories during the recent century. Nowadays, there is the use of newspapers, comic strips, comic books and artistic drawings on canvas among others. They all apply the modern technology like laser painting and canvas to bring the narrative exploits.

Paintings were mostly used in traditional art to cover most of the descriptive scenes. It is easier to represent these in paintings than in sculpture. Illustrating some figures in sculpture becomes more complex and may involve expert work and also may be hard to interpret. There are different types of narratives used today. Artists come up with their own ways to portray stories, represent the space and shape time. Artwork is never limited to one type of story, it is a diversified discipline.

The dawn of technology has brought about great improvements in the field of art. Art has been used in other aspects apart from telling stories. There is a great change compared to the traditional art which focused on a single dimension of descriptive art.

The nature of these special drawings is diverse depending on the creativity and intentions of the artist and the type of narrative to be represented. It can be used in different circumstances in real life. Different cultures apply descriptive art to preserve and represents their cultural undertakings, it is also used in academic perspective for the purpose of empowering students.
