By Eric Jimenez

People have been painting and sculpting for centuries. The use of such methods as a form of Christian art for as long as Christianity has been in existence. It has been a way for them to describe their Creator or a religious object or story to the world. It is believed to create a deeper revelation when brought to life on paper.

All throughout history, Christians have been known to use images a lot more than other religions because it is not usually allowed to use symbolic illustrations. Numerous well-known artists in the past have created infamous art works that have been put on view in churches, even though many artists rarely were celebrated for their achievements. In contemporary times, companies have turned this art into a commercial trade that is very profitable.

All sorts of art forms have been used by Christians since the beginning of time but some images are regarded as sacred thus not available for show. The most commonly portrayed are the paintings of the crucifixion, the apostles and the mother Mary. Also a favourite is stories of the life of Christ.

When these kind of art forms were advancing, the main focus was to exhibit the religious significance more than objects or individuals from the Old and New Testament. This way of thinking has changed tremendously. The art you have today portrays more detail such as the tapestries, sculptures, paintings, and drapings that you find in the Protestant, Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches, exquisitely put on view for all to see.

Many precious art throughout history miraculously endured for hundreds even thousands years. There are very valuable paintings to be viewed at museums across the world that date back to the first century. Some of the sculptures date back to the when Christianity originated.

There many copies to be found of infamous paintings around the globe. Knowing the difference between a forgery and the original will mean the difference in paying an extortionate sum of money for a copy or the real thing. A lot of these priceless works of art are heavily guarded in museums or secure locations, although a lot of them were lost in the Second World War.

Obtaining such art has developed into a commercial business for art enthusiasts or for individuals alike. You can find many corporations mass producing and publishing artwork in modern times. Unique art done by hand is also highly sought after but much more expensive and valuable, as it is also something very touching and personal.
