Conservative Candidates Illinois 2014 And Some Of Their Predecessors

By Leslie Ball

Illinois joined the union on December 3, 1818, to become the 21st state of the United States of America. The first elected governor was Shadrach Bond, who belonged to the then-Independent Party. He ran unopposed in what was described by historians as the Era of Good Feelings. More recently, Bruce Rauner was one of the conservative candidates Illinois 2014, when he was elected to succeed incumbent Patrick Quinn.

Patrick Joseph Quinn (known to his friends as Pat), assumed the governorship in 2009 to replace then-incumbent Rod Blagojevich, who was removed from office on charges of corruption along with his Chief of Staff, John Harris. He was later sentenced to 14 years in prison.

Before Bond became governor of Illinois, he represented the Illinois territory in Congress. The years immediately following the Napoleonic Wars are referred to in history as the Era of Good feelings. It is so remembered because of the relative calm induced by the implosion of the Federalist Party upon itself. The country breathed a sigh of relief to see the bitter bickering between the Federalists and the Democrat-Republicans.

Former Congressman Joe Walsh (not the band member) went on to become a talk show host. He was elected to represent the 8th Congressional District, which includes the mighty city of Chicago, from 2011 to 2013. His term of office was shorter than most through no fault of his own. The districts were redrawn and he was unable to capture the newly-created 14th district. Once a moderate Republican, Walsh has aligned himself with the far-right Tea Party. He is a fierce critic of President Barack Obama.

While Alan Keyes has given distinguished service to the country and to the Republican Party, he has never held an elected office. He ran for the Senate in 1988, 1992, and 2004, and also for the presidency in 1996, 2000, and 2008. It was President Ronald Reagan who plucked Keyes from relative obscurity and appointed him Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs, serving from 1985 to 1987. He now has his own talk show.

Stanford University graduate, Richard Uihlein, is an American businessman and generous donor to conservative causes. Dedicated to the premise of keeping his money out of the hot little hands of the government, he supports conservative Republicans and their allies in the tea party. He and his wife run a packaging supply company.

Before Joe Walsh and his predecessor Melissa Bean, Philip Crane held the critical post of representative to the 8th Congressional District, which includes Chicago, from 1969 to 2005, a term of 36 years. In 1990, he ran unsuccessfully for president against Ronald Reagan. He is the son of a physician and college professor, George Washington crane III.

Obviously, Abraham Lincoln is America's most well-known conservative politician. Lincoln belonged to the Whig Party, which had been formed in opposition to President Andrew Jackson and his band of Democrats. Lincoln's major achievements include freeing the slaves, preserving the American union through the bitter Civil War years, strengthening the federal government, and modernizing the economy. Lincoln's term, and life, were cut short by John Wilkes Booth, who assassinated him by gunshot in Ford's Theatre in 1865, just six days after General Robert E. Lee's surrender.
