Butterfly Tattoos - Flights of Fancy

By Tricia Myob

Butterfly Tattoos are symbols of so many things for many of us. They're certainly the favoured tattoos for women, quickly followed by stars or fairies.

Among the beauties of Butterfly Tattoos is they are incredibly flexible, you can place them pretty much anywhere. As a body tattoo they cause less issues than larger designs and can be twisted, rotated or flipped to fit into even the weirdestof spots. You can enlarge or reduce the original art work with little effect on it's integrity as a design. You might even create a flight of butterflies of differing shapes.

Tiny designs might lose some of their detail or they'd just appear as a smudged mess but with a bigger version the Tattoo Artist can truly go to the max and create a complex, detailed piece using a wide ranging colour palette that highlights your skin color and any other tattoos that you may have.

Selecting the palette is sure to be a good starting point for something as color dependent as a Butterfly tattoo. Softer shades are the general choice but a solid tribal style makes a genuine statement also. These are the choice of most men who have Butterfly tattoos.

If you are going to have a tiny tattoo, maybe on the ankle or the wrist then it's often best to go for 2 or 3 colours at most. Celtic tribal tattoo style with it's flowing lines tends to look good here. Something a bit larger on arms, legs or perhaps as a large body tattoo gives more scope. Never get tempted to try for too many colors as that might detract from the design. If you look at a real butterfly there are loads of subtle shades but not so many different base colors - and Mother Nature got it just about right there. There are few things more lovely.

As usual your best guide is your Tattoo Artist, let their experience and judgement guide you. If you do not trust these then go to a different artist. Never let somebody you do not trust completely tattoo you - ever!
