James' Singing is Emotional, Says Ex-Director

By Rebecca Masters

James Durbin - the 22-year-old singer from Santa Cruz and now one of the 4 finalists of the show American Idol. He has wowed and impressed people with his vocal prowess. One of the things that make him so famous among the masses is that his singing is so "emotional," as the three judges of the show said: an opinion shared by his ex-director Will Guilford.

It's a fact that Durbin is orphaned of his father, musician Willy Durbin who died when the James was just 9 years old. It's also known that James suffers from Asperger's Syndrome as well as Turret's Syndrome. The latter condition makes him suffer from tics, which director Guilford says are "more pronounced" while James is "waiting for the judges" during the show.

The latter is the reason for the pronounced tics that you could observe while the singer waits for his turn to sing in the Idol. The director also notes that, though Durbin's ticks are highly pronounced prior to singing, they all "go away" when he starts singing to the audience. While he's singing, you couldn't right away without delving that the young man has any of those two

Durbin had appeared at a production of "Kids on Broadway" in Santa Cruz, California when he was just 16. Guilford describes James impressing him the first time he had heard him sing on stage. He says that "[as] soon as [James]opened his mouth to sing... [I] said he could have any part in the theatre group. Guilford also indicates that James' talent was entirely "natural" and that he's "emotional" when he's so engrossed with his singing. That, for him, is what "touches people."

Indeed, Durbin is well on his way to becoming a star. Being a finalist of the American Idol, there is a lot of things for him to look forward to along the way.
