South Africa set to provide backdrop for next Bond film

By Ursula Hague

In recent months, there have been several reports that the as yet untitled Bond 23 is set to be filmed on location in India. However, it has now been confirmed that South Africa will be the country providing the backdrop for a substantial percentage of the film.

It is unclear why plans to film in India have been shelved. The country's Information and Broadcasting Ministry gave permission for filming undisturbed at various locations, but some sources have reported that some local authorities in the country were less ready to offer their support.

Now that India's Take One Productions has ruled out the possibility of Bond being filmed there, South Africa has taken India's place as the main location for the new film.

India Railways would have been involved in some of the planned scenes, and the organisation's executive director has maintained that EON productions never faced any objections to its plans, which had been discussed in detail. He made reference to plans for shooting a scene "between Mumbai and Goa on the hero train," indicating that the team behind Bond wanted "a special shot where a motorcycle from a bridge would jump on to a train, and the coach on which he'd jump needed to be re-enforced." India Railways were happy to facilitate this, but for reasons that remain unclear, filming in India has been abandoned.

Wherever Bond 23 is filmed, it sounds like it will be full of high octane thrills and spills, with epic stunts aplenty. Outside of South Africa, some filming will take place on location in Istanbul, and some scenes will be filmed at the UK's Pinewood Studios. Sam Mendes will direct the film, and Daniel Craig will be joined by the likes of Ralph Fiennes and Javier Bardem, with Naomie Harris playing Miss Moneypenny. There are even rumours that Q will be making a return.
