Beauty Pageants Worth Remembering

By Jessica Page

The first beauty pageant occurred in 1921. In fact, two beauty pageants took place in this same year. One is the National Beauty Tournament which happened in Atlantic City while the other event was Miss America Pageant. Miss America Pageant as usual was composed of different women, each representing the state to where they reside. But it only consisted of 8 candidates including 16-year old Margaret Gorman from Washington, D.C who won the first competition.

For two straight years (1922 and 1923), Mary Campbell won two titles in Miss America. This made organizers to modify the rule: if a girl has already won one title, she is no longer allowed to join the same pageant.

There were no Miss America competitions that occurred in the late twenties and early thirties. When it came back, candidates are now required to wear evening gowns as part of the competition. During the 1930's, candidates can have a choice if they want to showcase their talents. But in 1938, talent competitions have been required for all candidates.

Due to the popularity of Miss America, it was soon followed by other beauty pageants in the 1950's. Some of these pageants were the famous Miss World, Miss U.S.A, Junior Miss and most especially Miss Universe. It was also in the 1950's were the first live telecast of Miss America ensued.

The history of beauty pageants became even better in the 1960's. This decade was the time when the first black woman named Corrine Huff was given the crown of Miss U.S.A. Also in the same decade, more beauty pageants have risen like Miss Teenage America, Little Miss America and Little Miss Universe pageants. In 1962, Diane Sawyer, the winner of Junior Miss even became one of the most popular journalists across the world.

Throughout the years, beauty pageants continue to be a scene of immediate success in every generation, young and old, and they seem to be the one goal that every little girl dreams of. They all dream of hearing the ever popular "There She Is" song, while she is being crowned one of the new pageant winners.
