Beware Of Prohibited Downloads Landing You In Court

By Geoff James

The music industry was slow to appreciate the importance of downloading. So the vacuum was quickly filled with file sharing sites, which prospered. In the long run as expected the industry recognised the quandary & looked to the law to rectify it with both organisations and people being put through the legal process. An understandable reaction seeing that a crime is a crime . The industry determined on a course of aggressive and well-publicised court cases along with lobbying the law makers in the corridors of power.

Undoubtedly you'll have read about some of the lawsuits recently. Various parts if the media, both new & old are well informed of certain cases such as families being sued for well over a hundred grand. These cases are clearly meant to send out a message and try to reduce the problem. Even though it does seem very heavy handed.

At the same time as all this activity was happening, behind the scenes the music business had recognised the necessity of getting into the download market even if it was just to counteract the decrease in album & CD sales. Apple of course has made the process very easy for consumers & fairly cheap as well. At the same time the approach of giving away something for free to increase sales was recognised and implemented. They help to widen the artists' fan base, which can be exploited to make money.

So the big question is; is the double-pronged action working? It seems to be up to a point. Although sales of CD's have dropped along with record companies profits, the number of people seeing live music is increasing. With the money to be made from gigging musicians are able to claw back the loss of earnings from falling CD sales.

The traditional ways of talent spotting have evolved to recognise the internet. They are looking at the social media sites & hunting out popular bands & individuals with many downloads. With people already listening to the music it is pretty certain the band will be successful and make money

With the pleasure of hearing live music, seeing bands and singers doing it live then why bother with illegal downloads and ruin the risk of a criminal record.
