Making the wedding dress for Your Own

By Miracle Pan

I have lost some weight so it is a little big all over, however what really bothers me is the top part - I am a small B, and the way the neckline is shaped is more for concealing a larger chest, and it makes mine look nonexistent! I even tried it on w/ a bustier-still no luck! Basically, I figured out that if somehow I could get the straps altered to more of a sweetheart halter neckline (by altering the "v" part), it would be 100% more flattering for my figure. My question is - how hard is this to do, especially considering that the dress is mostly lace &beading? The cost isn't a factor, since anything will be cheaper than buying a new dress, however can it even be done?

David's bridal will actually take back the dress and let you exchange it for another one up until your wedding date so long as it has not been longer than a year. This was a specific question that I asked when I purchased my dress from them a month ago just in case I lost a lot of weight or just did not like the dress later on. Also they may not do that type of alteration on the dress at davits bridal because when I was asking about them changing something and also adding some more detail on another dress they said that the designers would not allow them to make any changes to the dress, the only thing they could do was hem it or taking it in or add sleeves.

Basket case has such a good answer, follow what she has told you as closely as you can. Please keep in mind that because it rightfully SHOULD be lined in silk, - remember that silk is very slippery and if it is not attached correctly to the shantung fabric, it can look very wrinkled = the wrinkles will show through the shantung. Buy a pattern, and follow the amount of fabric that will be needed to complete the dress as you want it to be, considering the length.

Firstly you need to know the pattern she is using, if any. Patterns always have convenient measurements so you already know how much you'll need. If she is draping and skipping the pattern for her model you may want to take a look at a similar pattern to her plans for the dress, it will give you a rough estimate of the dress and how much fabric to buy. Always buy extra... You never know if you'll need it. Don't skimp or cheap out on the zipper, yes, you can get them for a dollar but as far as zippers go, there really is a difference.

There is a lot of advice I could give you but the most important really, is to make sure your friend is a skilled seamstress. You don't want to spend as much on scrap fabric as you would for a dress itself (you can find cheaper versions of just about any dress online.) makes sure you know you are both on the same page and that she can back up the ideas with talent.
