Learn How To Play Acoustic Guitar For Beginners In One Day

By George Balibrera

You know you've always wanted to, so now's the time to learn acoustic guitar. Once you spend a few minutes, it will be with you forever. It is the easiest instrument in the world to learn. But you need an instrument. If you have one great. If not, go out and buy one or borrow from a friend.

Next you're going to tune it. Not to worry. It's quick to learn, and you'll always remember it. You need to be in tune in order to play.

You need to tune to the rest of the music in the world. If you have another instrument to tune to, use it. Or you can find a web site that has the notes for tuning. There are many of them.

Pluck the top E string. This is the thickest string on the guitar and is known as the E string (also known as the 6th string, counting up from the bottom). Pluck it with your finger or pick and play the same E note on the piano or online. Now adjust your first tuning peg so that the sounds are exactly the same (no wavering sound between them).

Place the pad of your index finger against that same string at the 5th fret on the guitar neck. The second dot on the neck indicates the 5th fret. Pluck this string now and the string below (with no fingers on it). This is the A string. Turn the tuning peg for this string until the two are perfectly in tune.

You can repeat this same procedure for all of the strings to get them in tune to each other. When you get to tuning the 2nd string (counting up from the bottom, remember), you'll want to use the 4th fret (not the 5th) on the string above. All strings on the 5th, except when tuning the 2nd string, use 4th. This may sound confusing, but after you do it a couple of times, it will become second nature.

Now you're in tune. You're going to learn your first 3 chords - C, G, and D. You can use those to play a whole lot of songs. Look at the diagrams online of where to place your fingers for each chord.

If you want to learn acoustic guitar, that's all there is to it. It's not rocket science. What's next? Practice. Put your fingers in place for those 3 chords and practice strumming. Do it for 15 minutes a couple of times per day and within 2 or 3 days, your fingers won't ache anymore and it will feel natural to you. If you stop now, you'll give up. Just give it a few more days of practice and you'll be amazed. How to tune a guitar and how to play those 3 chords will be with your for the rest of your life. After that you can go online and learn songs to play with those chords, learn new chords and keep going as far as you want. But you'll never forget those first chords.
