Discovering Health In An Online Humor Magazine

By Miranda Sweeney

Laughter is good for the heart and soul. Whether ill, or just needing a good laugh, it is said laughter heals. Regardless of work environment, taking to time out to read an online humor magazine like "The Onion, " or others during breaks, lunch hours, or before and after work can often be a blessing to health and happiness.

Scientific research has shown how and why laughter can benefit the daily life of individuals. First, it is a natural response though while not as important as breathing or pumping blood which are also automatic bodily responses, is as important as shedding tears or scratching. Laughter is only better because it makes you feel better even after the laughter subsides.

Critics suggest that laughter is merely a response and that there are no valid health benefits. This could not be further from the truth. While some may question whether laughter is a valid prescription by a health care provider, there are many who now believe in the healing power it can provide. In many cases, belief based on scientific research which shows this to be case.

A book by Norman Cousins, Anatomy of An Illness suggest laughter can protect and heal the body. His view that laughter has the ability to heal first hand was proven when he discovered his pain went away while watching the Candid Camera and the Marx Brothers. After which, he also claims he was able to sleep hours instead of minutes without pain.

Mr. Cousins book might discuss laughter as a healing process, still it provides no solid scientific proof. Scientists, on the other hand has now stated that fifteen to twenty minutes a day can be good overall health and well being. Endorphins, as released during running are also released during laughter. Some individuals are prone to laugh attacks. When this is the case, the endorphins can cause a wide range of reactions from illness to silliness.

Critics exist when it comes to healing through laughter. Fortunately, there are far more who believe in the power of the body to heal itself through laughter than there are critics. Besides, it is hard to refute solid proof like that of Mr. Cousins who experienced pain free sleep on a regular basis after laughing only a few minutes each day.

There are multiple formats when it comes to humor and laughter. One can watch sit-coms, or attend a stand-up comedy show. Others finding reading comic strips, newspapers and other humorous content online to be more gratifying. Different people find listening, reading or watching comedy fun; However, as different people often find different things funny, it can also be fun to listen, read and watch alone at times.

Humor is anything that is comedic and funny. Humorous content generally creates a laugh out loud response from the audience. Whether that is an audience of one or one hundred doesn't matter. All that matters is that the humor generates laughter which can then help heal the body, mind and soul of audience members and the audience as a whole.
