Tips For Choosing A New York Theatre Workshop

By Deanne Shepard

New York NY is famous for many things and one of these is acting, most specifically on Broadway. Theatre is something that people go to New York to see. However you do not necessarily need to go there to watch theatre. With a New York theatre workshop you could also be part out of it!

A number of excellent actors have come from the New York theatres. It was here that Lee Strasberg studied the work of Stanislavsky. This study helped him to develop what is now known as the Method school of acting, an approach that would be adopted by actors such as Dustin Hoffman, Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep.

There may also be specific skills you want to improve. For example if you want to learn to be better at improvising then it is worth going to a workshop that is specifically about improvisation. People often associate this with comedy while in truth being able to improvise is also an excellent benefit for a dramatic performance as well.

Other classes may cover other aspects. For example improvisation is a tool that can be useful in both comedy and drama. While a lot of people associate improvisation with comedy it can also be used for dramatic effect. A classic example is the speech in Taxi Driver where the character Travis Bickle questions himself in the mirror.

This can be great experience for people who want to go to drama school or act in the theatre. It offers an introduction to various techniques. It also allows people who might be interested in acting to sample it and see if they want to study it further rather than investing in acting lessons at a drama school.

There are also applications outside of acting and the theatre that you may not necessarily associate with drama. A good example is self confidence. For a lot of people self confidence can be an issue. This is especially the case with young children and teenagers. Acting lessons and workshops can be a great way of making people feel self confident while at the same time helping them to stay focused.

However there are also applications outside theatre and acting. They can help to boost self confidence. This is especially important for children and young adults as they can often have confidence issues. For adults there is also the additional benefit of improved communication, ideal for any companies looking for some form of team building exercise.

As well as the workshop you also need to consider the person teaching. Ideally they will have the appropriate experience to guide you and help you develop your skills. You can find out more by looking up theatres in your local area as well as feedback from people who have attended workshops in the past. This will help you get the most from your classes.
