The Compelling Attraction Of Crime Fiction Books

By Deanne Shepard

Why is it that a certain genre has such appeal that it always appears on best seller lists? The reason for the popularity of crime fiction books has been pondered over for years. Some attribute this to the vicarious exposure to mystery and suspense. Others propose that the fact that justice prevails is appealing in a world where this often does not happen. Whatever the reason, the fact is undeniable. People love these novels.

Mystery and suspense will often be given as a reason. The attention of the reader is grabbed and held right to the end. We are in the midst of heart-stopping, nerve-wracking situations heading towards a dramatic climax. We get an adrenaline rush without actually being in danger. A murder usually drives the story and the compulsion to find out what happens makes the reader keep turning the pages.

As readers, we are often privy to how the mind of the killer works from an early stage. This is often the hook of a psychological thriller. We are drawn into their world and begin to understand their motives and what drives them, however twisted this might be.

The characters who set about solving the mystery are often carefully developed. We see all their flaws and admire their perseverance in spite of them. They are tenacious in their attempts to find the murderer. We are drawn into their lives and made to care about them, admiring their insight into human nature and urging them on as they seek out the killer.

The settings of these novels vary greatly. They may be set in various periods of history such as medieval times or even in the future. They are set in every country of the world, from Russia to Africa. The setting in which the action takes place may be described intimately and often forms part of the appeal.

These stories express the good and evil found in the world. They deal with life and death issues. Most of them stories end with the triumph of justice, usually more so than it does in real life. It is reassuring when evil is exposed and the perpetrators have to face consequences of their actions.

From the classic whodunit to gruesome modern thrillers, there is something to appeal to every taste. There are those who enjoy solving a puzzle and unraveling a mystery without too much exposure to violence. Others enjoy the thrill of feeling exposed to all the action although they are not actually in any danger. They even experience the adrenaline rush that usually comes when exposed to real danger.

It may seem strange that humans should want to read about such topics as murder and actually find enjoyment in this. After all, we have enough crime to contend with in our modern world. However, many of these novels are simply vehicles for the same themes that have fascinated humans for centuries. There are a great variety of such books now available from internet stores. Reading reviews written by fans can whet the appetite and help in making a decision about what to read.
