Watch The Best African Comedy Movies

By Cecile Ingram

There are a lot of very funny African comedy movies. No Surrender is about an ex-soldier who will go to any lengths in order to stop misdemeanours. However, because most people are scared of him, he gets away with his own bad conduct. After his younger brother dies, he marries the widow against her will. Then he tries to make her into a good wife. The film stars Nkem Owoh.

Return Of Aku and Popo Sisters features Osita Iheme and Chindu Ekedieze. It centers on Erente who protects himself and his fellow villagers using special powers. Aki and Popo are looking to create a better relationship with him but they're not sure how without starting trouble. There is a sequel to this film too.

Suicide Bombers is a very popular film starring Charles Awurum, Charles Inojia and Victor Osuagwu. It shows how far people will go to get away from poverty. A sequel was made, using the same actors and then there was a related film titled Lost Bomb. Many people believe them to be among the finest comedies ever produced in Africa.

Crime Crisis is about a bus driver called Ishmael, who believes that Nigeria needs to re-invent itself in order for things to improve in the country. However, instead of changing of things, he spends most of his time arguing with passengers who leave trash on the road. He gets thrown in jail because he keeps fighting police officers who he thinks are not doing a good job. It stars John Okafor and Charles Awurum.

Akiki is the central character in Holy Life. He's extraordinarily choosy when it comes to women. He always rejects the ones he meets. He tricks his younger brother into lending him money by saying it is to pay for his wedding. However, Akiki has no intentions of getting married. Soon, his brother elopes which makes Akiki angry because he is the eldest and is supposed to marry first. A family feud takes place.

Old Fools stars Nkem Owoh. It's the tale of a family who fight each other because one faction will not compromise with the other. Some some secrets are revealed however, and this results in one group gaining the upper hand. It was marketed as a must see comedy. They made a sequel to it as well.

Popo and Aki are the main characters in Village Rascals. They constantly get into trouble but find themselves out of their depth when they steal a mask and sell it to some tourists. They have a good time because of the money but trouble starts for the tourists. It turns out that the mask has been protecting the village for many centuries and now the gods want revenge.

Another favorite of the African comedy movies is Shattered Mirror. This is about a man who receives foul mouthed abuse from his father because he is unemployed. Eventually, poverty and a lack of prospects push him into a deep depression. As a result, he joins a secret cult. In the end, his father's dream becomes a reality but at a far higher price than he ever imagined.
