Political Accountability In The Context Of Consultancy

By Tamika Powell

Citizens belong in a nation and are encapsulated within the ruling of duly elected candidates who form the government. Within the nation is a society of people who have different roles to portray and purposes to fulfill. The issue of political accountability greatly involves itself in the plight of the government to promote the common good.

However, it is true that issues will always remain to exist. Every time one comes up after the other, officials are also tasked to keep up to date so that they can present solutions to ease the wariness of the public. A good understanding of the situation can only be done if one is willing to listen and be educated through in depth involvement.

Any problem seen as a whole is bound to confuse any person at first. However, through the web of intricacies, therein lies so many details that can be tackled one by one. Once they are pointed out and scrutinized, parties involved in resolving the issue can then make proper projections that will reflect the needed actions to make.

Suffice it to say, a consultant has a crucial role in the structure of the government. Where one lacks in insight, the other makes up for it by stepping up to the challenge and doing the expert assessment. This kind of professional is also called a problem fixer, though admittedly, recommendations are hard to get by especially when information is withheld.

For people to be more driven to be responsible, they should embody the concept of political accountability. It is the only way to ensure that they are aware of the repercussions of carelessness in action. Given that actions may be caused by bias or retaliation, those who decide on something should be accountable for the causal effects.

Back to the political viewpoint, the consultant and the management are often in a tug of war kind of relationship. As consultants, the persons in charge should be ready for the required recommendations which are spawned from the facts presented to them. However, it is not all the time that the management will accept them because they control a great degree of risk for every decision.

This is the reason why recommendations should be sound ones in the first place. To build up advices and keep them safe from rejection, it is best for consultants to emulate the kind of positive behavior that is driven with initiative. In this way, they can envision the situation properly and create concrete solutions out of that well informed line of thinking.

Meanwhile, the blaming does not really depend on individuals alone. Sometimes, some managements also fall short on rendering the right amount of effort and commitment to work towards the solution. It should be a joint effort among everyone involved, because the sustainability of a political organization also relies on the strength of the foundation.

Consultants do have the expertise to hold the foundation on which any org relies on. They just need to channel their efforts into methods that are most effective given the context of the issue. Above all, political accountability should be a priority so that everyone can easy move along, rebuild and amend for the greater good.
