Spray Paint Art - How To Create Beautiful Works Of Art

By Steve Hinds

Spray Paint Art is the technique of creating amazing pictures by manipulating paint on posterboard. Paintings can also be performed on other mediums such as car bonnets and motorbike fuel tanks to quote two examples, but in general you'll see artists creating masterpieces on paper.

In Mexico in the 1970's a group of street artists founded a new type of art work which allowed them to make money from their skills. By producing spray paintings for the passing tourist trade they could supplement their other income with live displays, creating paintings to order for purchase.

Up until a few years ago you'd have only seen this artwork being made in tourist resorts, but now, thanks to the internet, you can watch hundreds of videos online and even learn how to practice the art yourself. All you need is posterboard, some spray paints and items from around the house which can be used as stencils. Oh and sheets of magazines or newspapers - depends on your preference.

The beauty of the art form is often in the reveal, with a multitude of colours going down on the paper haphazardly, only to produce something beautiful once the templates are placed and removed.

Experimentation is part of the fun when you're creating scenes. After applying the lighter colours or shades first, you then go over these with blacks or whites as this creates a texture when you pull paint back off the paper using magazine sheets or any other medium for removing paint.

Household items such as bowls and plates are used as templates to mask off a textured area you've created. By spraying around the template you can create planets, pyramids and other objects. When you become more advanced you can create your own stencils and pretty much recreate any object or landscape you wish.

The most popular or common subject matter is undoubtedly the space theme and this might focus on planets, pyramids, both or neither, but certainly these two objects are the easiest to practice when you're learning the art.

Spectacular planets and mystical pyramids are what draw the crowds in and this in turn is what helps the artist make more sales. People are not used to seeing these unreal picture types and this other worldly feeling attracts tourists to the display. Artists who expand their horizons into other topics often stand out more, especially online where you'll find thousands of space art pictures, but relatively few portraits of other subjects.

Nature themes are also very popular and they allow the painting of different things, waterfalls, trees, rocks and creatures. When you get into this kind of detail it's imperative that you've acquired good free hand skills, as templates are often too tricky to create for some creatures.

Hopefully this piece of writing has created an interest in spray paint art for you and if it has you'll need to pick up supplies to get started. Thankfully most of the items you need are either cheap or free and you can start on a shoestring budget. The spray cans themselves are a few pounds and can be found online quite cheaply, everything else can be raided from kitchen cupboards and the garage.

The final cherry on the cake is making money. When you get really good and your pictures compare with those online, why not sell them. People are always looking for original works of art and you can bring these to the public via street performances or online with a YouTube channel. Link this to your website and away you go!
