Painting a Story with Portrait Photography

By Karl Berch

Candid and spontaneous photographs taken in a session are occasionally the ones our clients love the most. We ask them to bring something personal that reflects who they may be at this time in there lives. For seniors it is most often some sports equipment a musical instrument. They also love bringing their pets. We've had everything form dogs and cats to snakes and horses. For younger children it's usually a favorite toy that is near and dear to them.

Having some private items available during a photograph session makes getting those candid's a straightforward process.

The best way to tell a little story about a senior that I've come up with is to get seniors truly concerned in the session. I'lI start by having them show me what they brought and then have them let me know why it's crucial to them. It's superb how swiftly they open up when they are talking about something that they love. When they're interacting with me this way, they're engaged and relaxed and some great candids and a fascinating story can be caught.

With the younger kids I really like to put them on the set with their favourite toys and just let them play and have some fun. I try to do little directing and if their the right age, I just talk to them about the toys and what their doing with them. After a few minutes they do not even know they are here to be photographed and a great story starts to appear.

Pictures are generally believed to be worth 1000 words. The most valuable thing that we all share on this earth is time. It's the only thing that we will give away and never get back. While we may only be on this earth for a limited time, our portraits will live on for ever. Pictures are freeze frames of moments of time you can only get back through an image. Just by picking up an old image you can suddenly emerge yourself into a sea of emotion. Is capturing a moment in your life truly worth it? I suspect the answer is quite plain.

Senior pictures are instant history lessons that provide you with a window to the past. Techniques of life can be explored in clear detail with a picture and your imaginativeness. We continually use photos that past cultures created to learn about what they were like. Have you got a documented history of your life for generations yet to come?

Photographs have a singular way of capturing minute details. Video is wonderful , but hails contrasted to the detail you get with an easy photograph. You can capture everything down to the feel of your skin in a picture. These minor details all help capture the basis of the image and moment of time portrayed.
