Where To Buy Silk Painting Supplies

By Marissa Velazquez

Silk painting supplies can be bought in almost any art supply store, and they are also available in many online stores. Painting on this amazing material became more popular lately, although it is well known in china and Japan for centuries. This is mainly due this lovely Serti technique. This technique makes it easy to create interesting and appealing designs.

If you are a beginner, maybe the best solution for you is to buy a special painting starter kit. It contains all those things you will need to get started painting on this amazing fabric. You will find different special paints there, pushpins, sumi brushes and foam brushes, as well as very detailed instructions to help you get started.

Another thing to think about is the choice of colors. You will need some basic colors to start with, and sometimes it isn't easy to choose them. Starter sets contain basic colors in small bottles, usually applicator bottles, and they are very practical solution for all beginners. When you learn the basics, it will be easier to choose your favorite colors, and then you can buy larger quantities.

Basic color sets usually contain all popular colors such as magenta, golden yellow, turquoise, violet and scarlet. Of course, if you already have an idea about your painting, it will be much easier to choose the colors you need. In any case, you will probably need some basic colors.

Serti technique is easy to learn and the results are really attractive. The designs are outlined with clear water based resist or gutta. It acts as a barrier for the dye and gives sharply defined borders. Once the color is perfectly set, you can remove the gutta. There are also resists available that are colored and don't have to be removed.

The first step is to wash and dry the textile. When it is still slightly dump, it needs to be set using an iron. You will also need to prepare a frame, to stretch the fabric and suspend it off the table. You may use canvas stretcher bars, they are available in all art supply stores. You can also design your own stretcher frames, if you are experienced in this.

If you are confident in your drawing skills, draw directly on the textile. This technique is mostly used on white silk, and it is transparent enough to see through. It is easier to draw on a piece of a paper first, and to recreate the design using pencil later. You can also use a vanishing marker for this purpose, and you may find it in art stores as well.

Now it is time to fill the applicator with resist. Attach a special tip on the top, and you are ready to start applying resist on the fabric. Once the resist is dry, you can apply the dye. After that, simply remove the gutta, or leave it on. Your lovely design is done, but you have to fix the color to make it permanent. The method of fixing depends on the type of silk painting supplies used.
