How You Can Be Parent Advocates

By Rhea Solomon

There are families in the world who have a special child or special children. Their children have special needs. Most of the fathers and mothers who have a child with certain conditions are parent advocates. When you say special needs, this refers to the physical handicap that these children have.

It is important that all the other members of the family understand that the other member with physical handicap needs to be given more attention than the others. When this necessity is explained well to the other members of the family, no jealousy will ensue. They know and understand that they need not be jealous of the special treatment that he is getting because this is part of his needs.

This is a necessity on his part. The other members of the family will be supportive of his needs. To avoid conflicts or sibling rivalry at home, the first thing that you should do is to explain the predicament as plainly as possible to them.

They can only be supportive if they have a clear understanding of the situation. They will be encouraged more to do their part in keeping the family together if they know the reason why they are doing this. This also helps prevent jealousy among members of the family.

You get exhausted too sometimes. You are only human. You also need the support of the others. Find similar people who are also dealing the same things in their home. There are associations and organizations that you can join. Check the internet for these associations.

It is indeed embarrassing for families to learn that their child is not treating others the respect they deserve them regardless of whether that person deserves the respect. Children should be taught how to respect others especially adults and those other children with disabilities. They should not be mocked nor looked down.

Educating these kids about the condition of others begins in the family. If they can see that their parents lead the example, then these kids can learn to show the same respect and compassion towards other children. Family should lead the way in showing compassion and kindness over the situation of others.

They can have funds through the government as well. If they have events, they need to ask permission from the local government. Also they know that people who want to know about their services and group would get in touch with the local government for information. That is why it helps that they are recognized in the community.

As support, the local municipality can post announcements and other events for the organization in their own bulletin board. Information about the advocacy of the group can be found in the website of the organization. So do not forget to check out if the organization has its own website. You will meet other parent advocates in these groups. It is good to meet new people.
