Appropriate Choices For Proper Dancewear For Ballet

By Sherri Facer

Dancewear has certainly seen a lot of changes over the past several hundreds of years. The very early forms of ballet costumes were commonly quite bulky and this led to movement being a lot more restricted. In the world of today, we now have other forms of dance than were the case in the 15th century so there will need to be more types of dancewear. The modern ballet skirts are short and sleeveless which makes it possible to be more flexible when dancing while also allowing the look to be elegant. Leotards, shoes and tights would be the dancewear most will select.

Leotards are the most common form of dancewear used in girls' ballet. Their primary purpose is to define body lines while remaining comfortable. It is important for leotards to be composed of a soft material that will stretch and provide support. Lycra, nylon, cotton, spandex or velvet are materials often used. You can also choose leotards with a lining in the bra to provide additional support and comfort. A variety of styles are available for ballet leotards, although most studios favor leotards with a tank or camisole. More distinctive options include leotards with long sleeves or cap sleeves, and they may also have turtle necks or polo necks.

Tights are a standard item for ballet uniforms. Dancers usually wear a leotard with tights, so you will typically need several pairs of tights. This is especially true if a dancer is taking more than one class each week. Quality tights are readily available at your local dancewear shop and many websites that sell girls' dancewear. Your best shopping strategy is to ask the teacher, studio owner, or other parents wear they shop.

Most young dancers wear flat ballet shoes that are soft and comfortable. This is primarily because their feet are still growing and they are not yet able to dance on their toes, known in ballet as dancing en pointe. The footwear sections of websites that sell girls' dancewear routinely offer a wide selection of ballet flats. Many of these sites also have educational articles and pointer about buying shoes. Pointe shoes for beginners have a hard box that still allows flexibility in the three-quarter position. Make sure that you follow your child's instructor's advice on pointe shoes and get a second opinion. I've heard too many horror stories about bad shoes, bad technique, or going on pointe to early. Be informed. Common fabrics for ballet shoes include canvas, satin and leather. Canvas shoes are the most affordable and easiest to clean while leather shoes are the most durable. Satin shoes look more elegant and are typically reserved for performances. Beginning dancers also wear flats with elastic to provide additional support.

A typical ballet costume consists of leotards, tights and shoes, although some classes require specific uniforms, especially in strict ballet schools. This means that you may need dancewear in specific designs or colors for some classes. If this is not the case, you should simply buy sturdy dancewear that will withstand rigorous dance lessons.

Looking on the internet, you can locate ballet garments with footed and footless styles and they are also offered in stretchable fabrics such as nylon, microfibre and polyamide. Quit a number of colors can be selected from including ivory, pink, pistachio, black, beige, purple and tan. Bright colors might not be allowed in certain ballet classes so always make sure what is allowed in class before buying anything.

You can get by with high-quality tights, leotards and soft ballet flats as long as you are just taking classes, especially at the beginning of your ballet studies. However, you will need to purchase additional items as you progress in your studies. You will also need to make additional purchases when you begin performing on stage, such as gloves, unitards and tutus.
