Options for Traffic Problems in Your Neighborhood

By Jessie Mccafferty

Stop signs are necessary at many intersections to help the flow of traffic. Utilizing the signs as a traffic slowing devic, is at times a poor choice, however. If your city or town has issues with speeds on a particular stretch of road, putting stops at intersections on that road might seem like a smart idea. Sadly, it can really make a threatening traffic situation much worse.

Intersections where there are often collisions between vehicles as well as injuries caused when pedestrians are struck by moving cars. It is smart to use these signs that stop traffic and provide some order to the flow of traffic. Stop lights are often a better solution at heavily traveled intersections, especially when there are two or more lanes each way, because they take away any driver doubt. Instead of wondering who has the right-of-way, drivers can't go till they're given a green light, helping to stop collisions.

When there isn't a collision problem but a speeding problem, stop signs may finish up causing more issues than they remove. This is particularly true if more than one will be installed on a street, for example a stop at each junction or one every few blocks.

When drivers know that they will have to stop repeatedly, they may speed up between the signs to try to save the time they lose when stopping. This could actually cause more speeding between them, making the roads more threatening for pedestrians and other drivers.

TraffiCalm Systems manufactures lit dynamic signs that work more efficiently than stop signs for slowing traffic because they do not cause stops and delays. They merely provide feedback for drivers that makes them conscious of their speed. Most slow down whether they're speeding or not. This prevents drivers' frustration with constant stops and the tendency to speed between intersections to avoid losing time.
