Traits That Therapists Must Use When Working With Customers Dealing With Sexual Abuse Survivor Stories

Many at times counselors get to be paid a visit by people who have had horrifying sexual abuse survivor stories happen to them. When this happens, they should be well equipped to be able to help their clients. And contrary to popular belief, both sexes get abused with an almost equal frequency.

The people offering counseling services are found in various places. At the top of the list being health care facilities, government agencies, and religious institutions among other such places. All counselors out there need to share some common characteristics so as to ensure that they do a good job. Some common key attributes are discussed below.

One of the key things that is needed is certification. A degree in psychology or a related field would be helpful. Some people even go ahead and do a doctorates program just so as to improve their curriculum vitae.

One should also have remarkable interpersonal skills. The victims who come for assistance come from very different backgrounds. There is therefore need for the people dealing with them to know how best to handle them.

Organization skills are vital in such a field. This is because each client needs to have an updated history maintained. Some of the key functions include writing reports and conducting follow ups.

Problem solving skills is another thing that one should have. Each problem that the customer has must be treated uniquely. There should also be some possible solution for whatever situation that may be affecting the client.

Another thing that counselors should have is good listening skills. They should be able to have unconditional positive regard towards the clients who come with them with sexual abuse survivor stories. And by listening to them, the victim gets to reveal all that troubles him or her. And this is the first step towards healing and receiving closure regarding the trauma that he or she has gone through.
