Easy Tips On Fixing Intonation

By Lenore Bolton

Written and verbal messages have always been the most common means by which people communicate and each have an advantage over the other. Written messages have evolved ever since and with technology, messages could be sent from anywhere to someone who is several miles apart. Though in these ways messages are sent faster, the emotions like happiness, anger, sadness, etc. That a personal message could convey is lost even with all those smileys. A personal message could be effectively delivered with the right speaking tone but this could be a problem to some and they also find fixing intonation somewhat difficult.

Giving your message the proper tone is not only essential to convey your emotions to the person you converse with but also to distinguish whether you are asking a question, giving an order, or simply saying an informative statement. For regular conversations with close peers, this may not be that important. But for businesses, this is crucial.

For example you are applying for a job in an insurance company and to get hired, the manager is asking you to convince him why he should buy an insurance plan from you. You felt that you have given the manager very good reasons why he should have an insurance plan but you were shocked that you did not get hired. It may be true that the reasons you provided were convincing but the way you delivered them were not.

In the same manner, if you have a flat tone, you will not sound convincing. Or in other words, your client will get bored listening to you and will make him lose all the interest in availing your services. This is just one example on how a bad speaking tone could affect your career and there are actually an endless number of similar scenarios. Moreover, it could also affect your relationship with other people.

Proper pronunciation of words is a factor in a good speaking tone. And usually, this boils downs to knowing where the accent should be placed. Actually, this is among the first lessons that were taught in an English class during preschool and primary education years. Mispronunciation of some words becomes a problem to some because they get used to pronouncing some words with a wrong accent.

In subjects in colleges, especially Mathematics and Engineering, the best way to understand a topic is by solved examples or applications of the theories being taught. Similarly in improving your tone when conversing, such method works. Conversational television shows are analogous to the Mathematical problems in a way that they show an actual application of proper pronunciation that result in a good speaking tone.

In every endeavor, the saying that practice makes perfect is true. After studying the correct pronunciation of the words you are having problems with, then the most logical thing to do is practice using them in sentences and observe if your are already doing it right.

Fixing intonation requires your effort. And if you really want to be successful not only in this endeavor, you need to understand that success does not come without a price.
