Friendship And Politics: Poles Apart?

By Dmitry Vasenyov

Maybe you are aware that making friends is a tricky process. We all know that by the very first meeting with someone new we should confine ourselves to a simple and safe small talk. We are edified never to discuss disputable topics with people we`ve just met. These topics are religion, social issues and, of course, politics. Such a conversation may result in a bitter discussion if you and your new acquaintance have contrary views on political situation in the country.

However, is it true that such political discussion can spoil all chances for a future friendship with a new person? What can you do if someone attracts you, but you dislike their political views? Will you have to limit your relationships with such folks?

Today politics is a very intense subject. It is not a rarity when there spark heated debates among folks with dissimilar political opinions. So, you should realize it yourself that politics should not be discussed with folks you don`t know well. But situations may differ greatly. If you take part in a political conference and you are surrounded by folks who love and can lead a mutual political talk this is one thing. All these individuals are keen on having political conversations and you won`t have any troubles with them.

But if you are surrounded by completely unknown folks, you should better comprehend what type of persons are around you and just then pick someone for a political conversation. But be sensible and don`t go too far in this conversation.

The majority of us are not extremely interested in politics, but this sphere is so powerful that is able to destroy any relationship, especially if you have just met someone. So, if you want to continue your new friendship you should be tolerant and don`t criticize opposite views of your interlocutor. Frequently, people with opposite political views can be good friends if they avoid being intolerable towards each other.
