The Composition And Description Of Film Crew Jobs

By Sally Delacruz

Production of films is an affair that makes use of very many members within the filming team. This means that many film crew jobs are grabbed in any movie producing company. The crew is always a very different group from the cast. The later is involved in the actual enactment of events in front of cameras, or contribute their voices in filming. They are also not synonymous to producers. The later are company shareholders or intellectual property.

Crews are composed of many departments that perform different jobs. The job description of each of these departments has been evolving with the passage of time. What used to be done a decade ago by one member of a department is not done today by somebody in the same position.

Three phases that complement each other are involved in producing motion pictures. They are the pre-production phase, the principal picture shooting section and the post-production session. Every activity in the process of movie production is affiliated to any of the three areas. It is also common to divide the team into below the line and above the line crews.

A director in filming is not often regarded as a member of the departments in production. His/her core duties include overseeing the chronological flow of events in the plot. He/she issues instructions and arranges actors in the setting. In addition, his responsibilities entail choosing settings that are appropriate for all the scenes. He instructs camera people where to place their devices, and regulates the quantity of light required in each scene.

Another very crucial factor in this industry is production. A lot of people have never considered it as a department. They have, rather, always seen as a series of functional categories. This section is composed of the senior producer, the executive producer, the production manager, production coordinators and vice coordinators, a few assistant directors, accounting officers and location managers.

The production section is also made up of individuals known as line producers and vice producers. The former have the responsibility liaising with budgeting officers and the producing studio. They are referred to as a line producers due to their duties of lining up every material needed in producing a film. Production assistants help in handling general responsibilities in production.

The crew is also made of accounting departments. Their main duties are; ensuring that all expenses are within the budget, and everyone gets his pay. Hollywood normally employs a centralized accounting department for their movies. Accounting assistants are employed to assist the senior accountants in managing the budget.

Another section of this team is the locations department. The head of this people is called a location manager. He/she is charged with the responsibility of looking for good settings for all scenes. He/she ensures that the settings are well prepared for actions. Junior members in this sector include the location scout, deputy location manager and location assistant among other members.

The last area we shall discuss is that charged with providing continuity. These people follow every single scene keenly to ensure that actors do their parts as planned. In case of any deviation, they prompt people responsible for corrections. There are many people involved in filming, and these are only few of them.
