How To Make Different RC Tank Tracks

By Gloria Gardner

Many people wonder how to build RC tank tracks. There are several techniques on how to do this and they are pretty simple to master. Most of them can be built using materials that are easily available and with no prior skills.

The easiest track to build is the bicycle chain but it is not very durable. The materials required are wooden treads and 2 chains from a bicycle. To connect the chain and treads pop rivets made from aluminum are used. The tread is made from masonite because this material has a good grip and it is readily available. A bicycle chain that is about 5 feet can be bought for cheap. You also need 144 rivets. Total cost for this track should be relatively cheap.

For the treadmill track you will need a treadmill belt, wooden treads and guide teeth which can be attached using brads and glue. You can find surplus treadmill belt from a gym. The cost of a treadmill if you are unable to get one for free should be cheap. You will probably be able to scrounge for scrap wood.

A roller chain truck is a heavy duty version of the bicycle chain. A roller chain track uses a single chain at the middle. A drive sprocket that is toothed moves the track along. Plastic, wooden or masonite treads are connected to the roller chain using screws or rivets. For heavy tanks 0.75 inch long link chains are best.

You can also use a plastic conveyor track instead of the roller chain. The plastic conveyor does not need any constructing and this makes it a bit expensive. It costs much more than the other tracks. After purchasing the sprockets and the belt link all you are required to do is to make the track and mount the tank.

Other tracks that can be constructed include the hinge track, chain and bolt track as well as a molded track. Depending on preference there are many materials that can be used on the track systems. It is very enjoyable to build rc tank tracks and use them in combat.
