Now You Too Can Play A Double Reed Instrument

By Amy Meyer

Some people might have heard of these types of reeds before, but they are not sure what instruments they are used for. The most common answers would be the oboe and the bassoon, which are both easily recognized by their tone that is produced by the double reed. One instrument that is not quite seen as often is the English horn, which looks similar to the oboe but has a bulbous end.

If you are having trouble getting the kind of tone or volume you want out of your instrument, the problem might be that you are not soaking it for long enough. If you are not already, it might be a good idea to keep a small cup of water on hand for soaking rather than just sucking on the reeds like some woodwind players do. With double reeds, you really have to completely submerge the end that you put in your mouth in order for it to vibrate fully when you are playing it.

It is always good to have a few reeds backup just in case you need them. Oftentimes, a break can happen when you very least expect it. If you are worried about this kind of thing happening, just having a few extra on hand can make all the difference in the world. Particularly if you are coming up on a performance, you will want to have as many extras as possible, and make sure that they are all soaked and ready of the worst should happen.

This is something that can make a great duck call. It is something that plenty of hunters have used as an inexpensive substitute. The great thing about these duck calls is that they can last quite a long time as long as appropriate care and maintenance steps are taken.

Some people only like certain types of music, and that is what they want to stick to both with their playing and their listening. If that is the case for you, it might be a comfort to hear that these instruments work well in many different genres. All you have to do is find out that you like and then you can start playing in it with these great instruments.

If you are expecting to master this kind of thing in just a few days, you are in for an unpleasant surprise. Nothing like this ever comes without practice, and you will have to devote yourself to lots of that if you ever want to be as good as the professionals. While it might sound like a daunting task, all it really takes is setting aside some time each day.

There are plenty of brands for you to choose from when it comes to reeds. Most musicians have their own personal favorite. There is no exact right answer as to which brand or hardness is the best, and you just have to try out different ones until you find one that suits you.

Nothing is more helpful than going online to find out about this kind of thing. You can easily check out forums of other musicians talking about the ins and outs of these reeds. It helps a lot to hear directly from the people who actually use them.
