By Douglas Carter

Framing a painting or photograph you have may be something you want to do for a while now but not sure on how to properly do it. You may want it to complement the decorations in your house or accentuate and focus on it more. Protection against particles and other elements may also be what you have in mind.

But choosing a frame randomly and just basing it on if the painting will fit in it or not is not the best way to do it. There are more things that needs to be thought of when custom framing for artwork. Syracuse, NY has shops that sells frames which could be helpful. Here are some useful advices in deciding on which to buy.

Know the size of the artwork you have in order to determine the options available for you to use. Standard sizes are easier to find frames for because they are readily available most of the time while those of different sizes need custom frames. The mouldings of large frames must not be skinny as well so that it will be strong enough that it can support the artwork in it.

Glazing can also help protect your artwork and choose the type you need for it. There are standard ones that could protect your painting from particles and help keep its quality. Glazing that can reduce the harmful ultraviolet rays in order to protect the art from possible damage to its quality. Glazes with anti glare are used for pieces that are intended to be placed in bright areas so that people can still view it clearly. Oil paintings are not recommended having glazing on it to avoid smudges.

Matting is also used not just for conservation but also to highlight the painting itself and is usually neutral in color. This could add depth and can be used if you want to put multiple pictures in one frame. The widths of its matting should be bigger than the frame and also weighted at the bottom which means the bottom part is wider.

Give thought to the orientation of the place you will be putting your framed artwork. Landscape images work well when put on wide walls and images on portrait work well in narrow walls. Multiple frame images can be placed together like a puzzle if you have a big wall but only have smaller paintings at your disposal.

Consider the materials the frame will be made from. Frames made from wood have various styles and designs offering a modern, retro or classic look. Aluminum frames on the other hand are good for commercial spaces and modern houses.

The color the frame have is also essential in complementing the image and the decorations surrounding it. Neutral colors may be the safest to use but having a color that is the same with the prominent color of the image will help it pop out more. It would give a striking effect as well.

Think of the location it will be displayed. Related pictures can have similar frames to show their connections. You can also highlight and differentiate an image to others by giving it a different and contrasting frame compared to the others.
