Uses Of Remotely Operated Vehicles

By Tammie Caldwell

We have heard of vehicles that can be put to use without the operator being physically present in them. Their control is achieved by use of a series of cables or command signal from a source in which the operator is present. Remotely operated vehicles also known as ROV are used in waters and have the ability of attaining depths that divers cannot reach. They have found a number of uses as a result of this ability.

Scientists are always inventing new things as days pass. While carrying out research work in water bodies, they make use of the said vehicles. They also use them in undertaking experiments that need to be done in such areas. Sample collection is also achieved through their use as well as taking of videos and photos as evidence of their findings.

The explorers also use these types of locomotives to carry out their work of exploration and survey. Minerals can be deposited at the water floors which may be difficult for human beings to go there personally. Most of these have led to discovering of mineral rich regions at these depths. They also use them to collect samples of the same to determine the quality and quantity of their findings.

Among the features of these vehicles are the cameras and visual recorders fitted on them. The vehicles are therefore in a position to take images as well as visual recordings while in operation. This has resulted to them discovering a lot including ancient wrecks such as the infamous Titanic. They are also important in locating collapsed vessels and identifying their locations.

Another of their function is in retrieving items in deep depths or from wrecks. Airplanes have in the past crashed on water bodies and eventually sunk. Once a location of their wreck is identified, they are used to retrieve items such as the black box which is used to determine the course of the crashing. Some have special features and are used in life saving missions such as creating openings for trapped people.

The military is also using the same to achieve a number of their duties. In times of war or attacks, the machines are used to survey foreign water bodies or check the availability of an incoming vessel. They are ideal since they can easily go undiscovered by the enemies. The autos are also used in patrolling the water bodies as a matter of national security.

In films, we have seen scenes captured in deep waters. Some of these scenes comprise of regions that cannot support human life or are impossible for human to access. Such scenes are captured through the use of ROV. The nature documentaries makers also use them when covering topics concerning deep waters.

The oil and gas industries also find a number of uses from such a machine. They can be able to explore for areas with rich oil and gas deposits and also determine how possible the process of tapping such resources is. In case of oil spills, they are used to determine the level of damage caused and the best way to handle such a life threatening disaster.
