By Tammie Caldwell

Musical instruments need to be taken care of properly. Otherwise, they will not be able to produce the exact sound you want to make. Woodwind instruments, in particular, are one of the instruments that can easily accumulate dirt and bacteria since you will have to put your mouth into it in order to play.

This is also part of healthy hygiene. You cannot put your mouth into your brass, flute, trumpet, or saxophone if they are not properly sanitized. It is totally disgusting if you play them after a week or two of no cleaning or even a simple wiping at all. Bacteria can build up in the mouthpiece. Hence, this is the part that needs your constant attention. You have to sterilize it each time you are planning to play. You cannot sterilize the whole instrument, just the piece. But you can wipe the other parts with cloth and disinfectants.

Clean it regularly because it is the dirtiest part of the woodwind. The first tip is to collect all the needed stuff for the sterilization. You will need a mouthpiece disinfectant, and alcohol with high percentage of disinfectant, hot water in a cup, and clean cloth. Be careful since you are using hot water. After which, get the alcohol and wipe it with the cloth again. This is also a disinfectant which kills germs and bacteria that have been accumulated while the instrument was at rest. It is just as simple as pouring and wiping. You will have to make sure all the corners are wiped.

Then you can start sterilizing. Again, be careful with hot water. Get a small amount of soap and soak it into the hot water. Then mix them together prior to placing the mouthpiece into the mixture. It must be soaked for a maximum of twenty minutes or at least when the water begins to cool.

Then get one more clean and dry piece of cloth. Wipe it dry as well as the other parts of the instrument. This needs to be germ free before even attempting to put it in your mouth and play. As much as possible, keep disinfecting and sterilizing. These are the basic simple things you must remember.

You also have to do this as a basic before and after care. The life of a musical device can be longer not only because of the brand but because if how it is taken care of. Dirt can affect sound being produced.
