Understanding Literature And Symbols In Poetry

By Patty Goff

Students of literature always find their selves complaining about their assignments as most of their professors require them to submit a reaction paper about the assigned poems, short stories, plays, and novels that are all hard to understand. Reading them over and over again will not help unless you have a background of symbolisms to unlock the message in between the lines.

Literature stands for the opinions, views or perception, feelings, and the emotions of the writer. These writings give us messages indirectly and as readers we have the responsibility to connect and unlock the nouns, verbs, and adjectives to come up with an interpretation of symbols in poetry that have been used. The depth of the symbolism and language plays an important role to make the writing mysterious.

Every poem or story has its own theme to talk about. It may highlight about love, grief, success, defeat, death, war, and silence. They associate pain and suffering to dark, cold, and uncertain events. Writers use of memories and describe the events in creative selection of words that could really stimulate your imagination.

Symbolism is a technique widely used by creative writers to deliver a deeper meaning of the words instead of using the literal words. Aside from memories and experiences, writers love to put into words the things that they do observe around them. It is hard to understand especially if you are new to literature and symbolism.

Writing and symbolism are both interesting to learn. Having that urge to learn is achievable by simply going back to the basics that is reading books and more books. Visit your local bookstore or you may search for resources in the internet. There is a need to put yourself into the mind of the writer for you understand those indirect words.

Now if you analyze and think why authors opt for symbolism, the answer is very simple. They want to write vibrant images and strong feelings into words for the readers' to deal with. The words force you to feel and expectedly react to it. Words are very powerful tool for expressing emotions. Just like what they us, a pen is stronger and mightier than a sword.

Wanting to learn the use of symbolism as your main method of writing, you better begin with writing few words than writing many descriptive sentences or phrases. Just limit your words. Use your imagination in expressing and losing your emotions in paper. Do not rush things. Flow the imagery of lines that suit best to your motive of writing. The content should be hard and exciting.

Good poems have a variety of interpretations which make it so exciting to read. Sometimes it appears to us readers the word to be obscured, disorganized, and usually means the other way. This is a magical experience. It will take a lot of practice to use it right and be able to write symbolism into creative writing.

Literature classes are very challenging. As an aspiring writer, better look for a teacher who can teach you basic symbolism techniques. Teachers can guide and assist you as you learn higher and difficult writings.
