Learn About The Wonderful World Of Lighting Design

By David Torkee Lieu

Shed some light on that

Lighting design is always beautiful and astounding. Light brightens everything around it, while impressive from it's own structure. The main purpose of lighting design, other than looking fancy, is to illuminate the intended subject/area. Simple light bulbs have been carrying out this simple task for many years now. It used to be that you could sort of "grab and go" when your light bulb shopping. Simply find one that fits and you're good to go. But now, due to the increasing demand for energy saving appliances as well as more intricate product designs, light bulbs are getting more and more sophisticated.

Many new appliances as well as newly modeled houses use various kinds of lighting within the house. Now, instead of being able to simply buy any light bulb as a replacement, we now have to look at the certain specifications of the appliance itself. For example, putting a 75 watt bulb in a 40 watt lamp creates almost twice as much heat that is intended to be within the "safe" level of heat for the lamp. The result could potentially create a fire. Not the type of light we want..

- Set up your desired amount of lighting

The kind of lights used in lighting design highly depend upon what the lights are intended to be used for and what kind of room/position the light is placed in. A lighting design intended for an art gallery, for example, must remain consistent throughout the room, through all periods of the day in which it is used. One of the most frustrating things that could happen to an artist while painting could be the noticing of slight changes in the colors. As lighting changes, so do the way we see certain colors or mixes of colors. Because of this, lighting design on an art gallery must hold a consistent tone (warm, florescent.. etc). On the other hand, lighting design within a bar is different because of its different purposes. Bars want to create an environment that is well lit, but at the same time not too bright. The targeted tone is sort of "mellow." A popular kind of lighting used in bars is pendant lighting, mainly because it is a single unit fixture that can be easily adjusted to suit the area's lighting needs.

- Make your design stand out

An are that we particularly think of when we think about lighting designs or light shows are auditoriums. Since the main purpose of an auditorium is to supply those who are performing with the right amount of light for them to be seen by everyone in the building, they have a lot of room to get creative with the types of light that they use. Having such auditoriums with intricate lighting designs give the performer(s) the freedom to incorporate cool light shows or lighting specifications to their performance. Accordingly, auditorium lighting design demands very high powered lighting. Some of the lights utilized in auditoriums are beam lights, follow spot lights, and floor lights. Each light serves it's on specific purpose. When considering a project that involves such lights, your project can get expensive and require a lot of work. As we can see, Auditorium lighting designs take creativity to a whole new level.
