What Every Bride Should Know About Choosing A Custom Bridal Gown

By Rosella Campbell

One of the most important decisions a bride must make is which wedding gown to buy. A custom bridal gown is the perfect choice for brides who have specific design ideas in mind and desire a flawless fit made especially for their unique body shape. Talented dressmakers can work with the bride to make these wishes a reality for her special day.

The first step in designing the perfect dress, is to determine which styles, cuts, fabrics, etc., one looks best in and has as part of her regular wardrobe. Any pictures or sketches of qualities one is looking for in a gown should be collected, so they can be presented to the dressmaker. Together, the bride-to-be and her chosen seamstress can come up with a design that smartly combines all of these elements.

A talented designer can create a dress that encompasses the qualities which are important to her client, but still looks unified and together. Once the style has been chosen, the wedding date and measurements will be noted, and the price will be worked out as well. Some dressmakers will also make a prototype from muslin first so the bride can try it on and find out if any changes will need to be made in the finished dress.

It's important that there be very open communication between the bride and the person who is making her dress. An experienced seamstress can be a wealth of information and helpful advice for a bride who has never before chosen a wedding gown. Brides should feel free to ask questions and certainly share any concerns, as this will ensure they are happy with the finished product and that the designer does not have redo anything.

Trusting the dressmaker's professional opinion is a good idea, since she will likely be able to come up with recommendation and options that the bride wasn't even aware of, which may be even more appealing. If at any point the bride feels she is not pleased with something, she needs to make this known so a different direction can be taken that she will be more satisfied with.

The price of a custom dress is usually higher than that of an off-the-rack design, however it does not necessarily have to cost a lot. The materials used and time needed to complete it are the main factors which affect the cost. Most dresses take between three and six months to finish, depending on how complicated the design is. Several fittings are usually needed prior to completion.

One of the best reasons to choose a customized design, is that it ensures a perfect fit. It's a good idea for the bride to wear the shoes and undergarments that she intends to wear on her wedding day when she goes to each fitting, as these can influence the length and dimensions the gown must have.

Each bride may have a different budget from the next, and most dressmakers are more than happy to accommodate this as much as possible. Those who want a customized look will be shown various options that take into account both their personal wishes and the price range they have to work with.
