Choosing Funny Dragon Books For Boys

By Rosella Campbell

Dragons are mythical creatures that have been around for centuries. Their popularity never seems to wane. In the past, they have usually been depicted as fierce creatures that can torch whole villages with one breathe. In modern stories, however, the characters of the dragons are very diverse. Funny dragon books for boys cater to their fascination with dragons but can make them laugh out loud and may even result in a lifelong appreciation for reading.

Some of the dragons of old were thought to bring good luck but others were seen as ferocious creatures. In modern stories for children, dragons may be seen as fierce creatures but they are also seen in many other lights too. They are befriended, rescued from danger and even become pets. In a modern world, authors of stories for children have their dragons facing different struggles and challenges from those of the past.

When portraying the characters of these dragons, authors have allowed their imaginations to run free. They are quirky, grumpy, brave, mystical and mischievous. Most of them still have wings and claws but they come in all sorts of different sizes and colors.

Traditionally fire-breathing dragons bring destruction with every breath. The dragons in these stories for kids often use their fiery breathe for other purposes such as toasting marshmallows. Self conscious dragons may have difficulty breathing fire and some do not breathe fire at all. It is often the juxtaposition of fantasy and the mundane that creates the comedy.

The tastes of these modern dragons also differs from those in ancient tales that devoured humans and animals without a second thought. Some of them do not even like meat and have decided it is better to be a vegetarian. Others can be lured to attend parties by providing large buckets of tacos.

The behavior of dragons in stories is unpredictable to say the least. Just when a child thinks it is great fun to have a scaly fire-breather as a pet, they may be introduced to the complications involved in having to take responsibility for it. It is often the combination of the extremely ordinary and practical with the absurd and fantastic that creates the comedy.

These stories may be full of fun and adventure but they also help children to navigate through life. They connect with the characters and wonder what they would do in similar situations. Their imaginations are stimulated and their thinking skills and problem solving abilities are enhanced. They may also learn about the consequences of certain actions, relationships and various social issues in a fun context.

Dragons have always held a fascination, particularly for children and this shows no sign of abating. The stories for children currently being written with dragons as characters are often highly entertaining and beautifully illustrated. You can find one suitable for your particular child by examining book lists online and reading reviews written by other parents.
