What To Consider When Buying Faux Leather Handbags

By Marsha Klein

Demand for faux leather handbags has grown. Correspondingly, we have seen an increase in the variety of designs and quality available. These accessories are usually priced at an affordable level but there are instances where designer brands are pitched at costs that almost equal the genuine animal skins. Indeed with some of the most expensive ones, it quite difficult to distinguish one from the other.

Faux leather is the term that has been established in the consumer world as artificial material that has been specifically created to substitute the genuine article. It is also sometimes called leatherette. Leatherette has been extremely successful in markets the world over simply because it has major advantages that consumers appreciate. As such it is not just used in the manufacture of bags but also in clothes, shoes and furniture.

The principal factor that has lead to the success of the leatherette artificial alternative is the one of cost. It does a very good job of mimicking the real thing but at a fraction of the cost, in some cases, as low as just a quarter of the price. It means that it can be used for items that are just transitory fashion accessories such as some of the latest bags but when the fashion has passed they can be cast aside without too much of a financial loss to the consumer.

This being a man made material also carries a lot of weight with a large section of the market who choose to shop on ethical grounds. They appreciate knowing that the bags they carry have not cost the life of a living animal in its production. This may be a concern to vegetarians and animal welfare activists, however, it should be noted that the meat industry does produce real hide as a by product anyway.

Fashion trends of today are seeing a lot of very large bags being sported by the ladies. Such big items are extremely costive if produced from genuine animal skins. Leatherette enables even the most budget conscious fashion lover to adorn herself with a trendy accessory without breaking the bank. Some of the bags are crafted equally as well and include all the trimmings of their more expensive counterparts such as buckles and sashes.

The versatility of this material in the making of bags cannot be over emphasized. The nature of it is that it can be dyed to any color at all and the color is retained for the lifespan of the article without ever fading. Even the most luminous cyan or magenta shoes and dresses can have a matching bag of the same color. The material is extremely pliable as well and can be moulded into the most creative designs imaginable.

One of the criticisms of the material is its lack of durability. Some say it simply does not last as long as the real thing. It is true that in some high use circumstance this argument has some validity. However, with fashion bags it is not always true. They can last for years and years if only they are cared for properly. Alcohol based solutions are good for cleaning them and they should be stored in environments with reasonable humidity but not too damp.

Faux leather handbags are recommended for anyone who is looking for beautifully crafted high fashion articles that are affordable in price. They cannot be beaten on the range of designs available too.
