Use Hermes Scarves On Sale For An Instant Wardrobe Update

By Katrina Wheeler

The secret to always looking great is in the accessories you choose. You can, like the legendary Coco Chanel, turn any plain little black dress into something fabulous just by adding a string of pearls, for instance. Another accessory that can transform any outfit without having to put in too much effort is a great scarf. The ultimate is a designer one but it doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg. Simply try to find a couple of Hermes scarves on sale and you'll be able to create hundreds of looks with only a few wardrobe basics.

The Hermes company started out in 1837 in Paris. Originally it produced harnesses, saddles and the like for the affluent members of society. In 1918 the company made its first garment, a golf jacket, and during the 1920s it introduced handbags. Women's clothing followed by the end of that decade and in 1937, during its centenary, the company launched the first of the scarves for which it is famous.

Every scarf usually measures 90 cm on each side. Sometimes it is made of a cashmere and silk blend but most of the time the fabric used is pure silk. It's never just a plain square of fabric but instead color is added through detailed designs.

The scarves were a hit right from the start. Soon the rich and famous all started sporting them. They made it onto a postage stamp bearing the image of Queen Elizabeth and made it onto the big screen too, most notably in 'Basic Instinct'. Former Hollywood star and later member of the Monaco royal family, Princess Grace used hers as a sling when she broke her arm. Some people stitch two together to make striking cushions and others have them framed.

The designs are created by freelance artists who work with the company's team. It can take a year to produce a new design. Next, the workshop artisans determine the individual colors and engrave separate screens for printing each color. After the painstaking printing process is complete, the edges are stitched by hand.

There is no right or wrong way to tie or knot the scarf. It's so versatile that you can do almost anything with it. For example, fold it into a triangle and then tie this like a neckerchief. Otherwise, fold the triangle into a long, narrow strip and tie it in a bow or let the ends hang loose.

You don't even have to use the scarf only as something tied around your neck. It's big enough to turn into a top or a tunic, for instance. Tie it around your head for a bohemian gypsy look or fold it into a turban. It can even function as a handbag or as wrapping paper. The company now has an app that includes video tutorials but you'll also find several other ideas online.

In January or at the end of the season, browse your favorite boutique or luxury department store to find Hermes scarves on sale. Another option is to look online. Auction sites may even sell vintage designs that aren't readily available anymore.
