Why Medical Miracles Attract So Much Attention

By Susan Dawson

Since the beginning of time mankind has recorded miraculous events and none of these events are as prolific as medicinal ones. There are numerous stories of desperately ill or injured people that recovered against all hope and expectation. In some cases these healings were affected by humans or animals and in many others it simply cannot be explained. When it comes to medical miracles the jury is still out.

Miraculous recoveries have long been the subject of intense debate between various parties. While nobody will deny the fact that some people recover from diseases where their physicians have given up hope there is nevertheless differences of opinion on how such recoveries occurred. Some argue that the human body remains a mystery and that recovery in some cases are not miraculous but due to extraordinary resilience.

Patients that are diagnosed with serious ailments are understandably upset and many of them simply do not believe that they have fallen victim to a dread disease. They typically start to do research about their particular diseases and they inevitably come across accounts of miraculous cures. Such cures obviously attract attention. It is only natural that patients want to explore every possibility of a cure.

Many miraculous cures are nature based. A variety of people, including medical experts, patients themselves and nutrition experts extol the virtues of specific herbs and foods that are said to have a substantial influence on the progress of the disease in question. Unfortunately, medical science does not always support such curative qualities and this may cause confusion and conflict in the minds of the patients concerned.

Another interesting phenomenon is the large number of people, normally fanatically religious, that claim to be able to channel the healing power of the deity and thus cure people of every imaginable disease. Some of these people are extremely popular and they hold huge rallies where they lay hands on people, pray for them and claim to have cured them. Sadly, so many of them have been exposed as complete frauds.

Very sick people sometimes reach a point where they will try anything to get better. In some cases, people think if they become religious they will be rewarded by a miracle. Other people think that the cosmic powers will reward them if they dedicate their lives to charitable causes. Yet others think that mastery of disciplines such as yoga or meditation will give them the power to heal themselves.

There are many cynics that are of the opinion that there is no such thing as miracles. They say that people will try to attribute supernatural intervention to anything that cannot be explained logically or scientifically. Yet many experts in the field of medicine will confirm that they have witnessed recoveries that are totally beyond scientific explanation and that they cannot say just how it happened.

There are numerous stories of medical miracles. Whether they can be explained scientifically or not is surely not the issue. The issue is that people that were completely hopeless have experienced a cure that were not expected, that cannot be explained and that goes beyond human understanding. For many, that is enough.
