The Cross Movie Can Be Found On DVD

By Allyson Burke

Released in 2009, The Cross Movie is a film directed by Matthew Crouch. It was the first documentary he directed. It chronicles the journey of over thirty-eight thousand miles taken by Arthur Blessitt, who is now named in the Guinness Book of World Records when he walked the aforementioned distance while carrying a twelve-foot wooden cross. His goal was to present the gospel to every major island group and country around the world.

The aforementioned director and Blessitt met 20 years earlier. In the summer of 2008, the 2 men met for the 2nd time during Blessitt's journey to Zanzibar, on the African coast. It was during this time that Crouch came up with the idea to write a documentary and film, for the purpose of telling the entire story. The documentary details each facet of Blessitt's journey.

Blessitt's tale essentially begins with what he calls simple obedience to God: He felt as if God was leading him to fashion a huge cross which he then placed on the wall of his Hollywood, California Christian coffee house called "His Place". This was done in the mid-nineteen sixties, and by nineteen sixty-eight he had begun taking short walks to Hollywood's Sunset Strip in order to feed homeless individuals and share the gospel.

Blessitt quickly began feeling as if God was telling him to take a similar walk, only this time throughout the entire country. He left Hollywood shortly after, and started a journey that would lead as far as New York City and Washington DC. It began in 1969 on Christmas Day.

The next year, Blessitt took his cross into then war-torn Northern Ireland. It was this journey that began what commenced as a walk across the globe, as he felt led of God in 1988 to continue the trek until he had taken the gospel to every country possible. Ten years later, this mission was completed, and he even gained access to North Korea due to an extraordinary chain of events.

In July of 2008, the film mentioned above was finally completed. Blessitt's wife assisted Matthew Crouch, the film's director, due to the fact that she had traveled with her husband to more than two hundred and ninety of the countries he passed through during his journey. To this day, the excursion is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as "the world's longest walk."

The film gives a detailed account of Blessitt's journey through over three hundred countries, island groups, and territories. The specific distance was 38,102 miles, which is equal to circling the world one and a half times at the line of the equator. The film has been well received by both non-Christians and Christians, and showcases the genuine dedication and belief system of Arthur Blessitt and his family.

Additionally, the film includes numerous conversations Blessitt had with people he spoke to during his walk. Often, large groups waited to greet him, while other times he journeyed on in complete solitude. He visited many war-torn and troubled regions of the world. No matter how difficult circumstances became, he was never tempted to quit. Select theaters played The Cross Movie, and it can now be purchased from a variety of retailers, as well as over the Internet.
