Home Security Solutions To Increase Safety

By Kenny Marcum

When inside their homes, most people want to have a sense of safety. Unfortunately, today break-ins occur in the best of neighborhoods. Home security solutions such as the installation of a burglar alarm can monitor the dwelling to ensure occupants are warned of intruders.

Most burglar alarms have two states in which they may be set. If the system is disarmed, it is turned off and will do nothing. When the system is armed, it is operating. Most commonly, the system is armed or disarmed by entering a personal code on the unit's keypad. Most give the occupant up to two minutes to disarm the system after opening the door.

Windows and doors have trigger mechanisms attached to set off the alarm. When these trigger mechanisms are opened, a signal is sent. While businesses often add a level of protection by adding motion sensors, homes are often occupied when systems are armed. This makes the motion detector less useful, as the occupants could set off the alarm by walking across a room.

Usually the systems are designed to alert a monitoring company that then contacts the police. The alert may be sent through phone, internet or in some other method. Most systems are designed to create a loud, continuous noise to alert the occupants of the building and scare off intruders. Less expensive models may only make the loud noise without alerting anyone on the outside.

Units are generally reliable. Some offer a battery backup so they continue working even with a power failure. Since older units depended on a phone line, burglars often would cut phone wires. Newer systems use cellular or radio transmitters to eliminate this problem.

Home security solutions can make residents safer. They offer several configurations to meet occupant needs. The alert they sound can keep occupants safe in their homes.
