Why Buy From Your Local Military Surplus Store

By Lora Jones

Many people notice the quantity of Army apparel that is worn on their local construction site. There is a good reason behind this, and it doesn't mean that the Corps of Engineers are now building apartment blocks. It is merely that the average construction worker appreciates how hard wearing the clothing is. As a consequence they buy a lot of their work clothes from a military surplus store.

Take the boots for example. They have been designed to take a lot of punishment. The Army spend an awful lot of time in boots, so they have to be durable as well as offering the wearer some comfort. Those working on a construction site also have similar needs, and they don't mind if they are not to the latest approved pattern.

The average person will not think about the thinking and testing that lies behind military equipment and clothing. The fabrics used are both strong and lightweight. Areas subjected to harder wearing, elbows and knees, often have extra thicknesses. If the fabric is tightly woven, it will be mainly windproof.

Gloves are something else to consider. People want gloves that will either keep their hands warm or provide protection, preferably both. Yet they also don't want them big and bulky, so that they become impractical to use, these are exactly the same requirements that the Army has.

Consider some of the areas where troops have been serving in recent years, these environments can produce some harsh weather conditions. So therefore all of their bad weather clothing has been subjected to extreme testing. When you consider these factors it is unsurprising to see forces clothing being used in a civilian situation.

Another beneficiary could be the average weekend hiker. They too want good quality footwear, and quality protection from the weather. Yet again such items have often started out in the world of the forces.

Footwear and clothing are just the tip of the iceberg for the keen hiker. Think of navigation, their map will probably be carried in a map case. They will either be using a compass or a handheld GPS unit. Maybe they are also carrying a lightweight tent with them. All of these items are available at affordable prices at your local outlet.

Tools are something else that are popular purchases. Once again they have to be robust enough to withstand a wide range of environments. They also have to be functional. Companies with contracts to supply the Armed Forces spend time and effort making sure that the equipment or clothing will ideally suit the purpose for which it is intended.

As a result many more individuals see the merit of buying from a military surplus store. Just like in the Army, they now attract people from all different walks of life. One common factor with these items is that they are not faulty, they have been superseded and so are now surplus to requirement.
