How To Make Abstract Watercolor Painting Effects

By Lana Bray

Abstract watercolor painting is one of the most popular forms of painting because of its dynamic structure and special kind of dimension that appeals to the viewers. That is why there are so many methods and techniques that one will be using when he is trying to create masterpiece. Now if one is still not familiar with some of the techniques for this art form, then here are some of the good methods.

Now before one starts to make anything, he should first get hold of all the necessary things that he will be needing. Aside from a paintbrush, he will be needing a special piece of paper that is designed specially for watercolor painting. Paper like this is needed simply because one will be needing a canvas that can hold the paint without it getting ruined.

Second on the list would be a card board paper that will be stuck to the paper and act as a canvas. So when one has already gotten these two materials, then he should start spraying water on the paper and wait for it dry. By making it damp, the artist is allowing the paper to hold together the paint so that it does not drip so much.

The next stage would be to apply some of the paint on to the paper in order to create the painting. When making the paints, one must first get coloring materials and mix them with water so that it is not so thick. What one can do to make his work more interesting is that he can allow a lot of water to be added so that the paint will drip and create more effects.

Of course although this is abstract art, one must already have an idea of what he would want to paint. Once he has done the initial applying of the paint, then he should now throw in a little bit of salt bits and let the paper absorb the small crystals. The reason one should do this is so that he can create a shiny and jagged effect on the canvas.

After the painting has dried up, one should now put a plastic cover or plastic bag over the canvas and let it stick to the paint. This will help spread the paint around and create a whole new dimension and effect. So put the plastic over the canvas and wait for the paint to dry.

When one has already finished the previous step, he should now take a toothbrush and put another coat of paint on it. From there, try to add a little bit more extra layer on to the paper so that it can have a layered effect. The three dimensional effect that many people see in abstract paintings comes from this special technique.

So for beginners of abstract watercolor painting, these steps may be followed in order to create a beautiful portrait. Remember that one can keep on adding extra coats and bagging the canvas with a plastic bag as much as he wants. By doing this, he can create so many different shapes and colors.
