Understanding The Role Of Photography Reps

By Jennie Sandoval

Despite the influx of photo hobbyists and so called professionals in the biz, there are ongoing debates that should be looked into in a deeper perspective. Amidst the talks about sticking to the traditional means of presenting a portfolio or going purely digital, there are more facets to the profession that is explorable. Such is the importance of working with photography reps and how to find them among the pool of potentials.

Surely, even when photographers have gone through the routine of self tutorial and constant learning, it would be a dream to just be assigned a suitable project without having to spend most of the time scouring for prospects. Finding assignments is one crucial part of keeping the cash flowing. Reps are responsible for securing those deals.

As the middleman, the rep stands in between the photographer and the client. Any sort of information would be relayed by the said person, and this without having the let the two parties meet all the time. Given the number of competitors in the market and how hard it is to build trust, you should be working with a reliable partner.

Representatives possess an eye for business potentials because they know how the market works for photographers. They have established connections with agencies and other professional artists in the field which they can exploit in a positive sense of the word. More importantly, they know how to negotiate to your advantage and lend guidance along the way.

When the team works together, there has to be a designation of the roles. One should be assigned to the marketing wherein it involves meeting with clients and establishing relations to finally seal a deal. On the other hand, production work should also be accounted for as it involves the crunch time during prep.

The whole business is still yours for the taking. However, you should realize early on that you need to form a team of people who will work together for the proper marketing of your services. Thus, you need not just a manager for the control of finances but also a rep who will be an extension of you.

Before hiring a representation for your brand, assess if your body of work is worthy enough for their interest. Given that they have been exposed to the field more than you, it is also their discretion to choose clients whose works they personally believe in. Therefore, both key components of the duo should be fitting enough for each other to create a harmonious relationship that rakes in the good profit and a great deal of fulfillment.

There has to be qualifications that you should stick to so that you can maintain a certain standard for your choice. If you have all of them accounted for, you can find a rep through your network or through researching alone. When you know a good source, surely you can find a good match that fits your description.

Even when you do possess the potential to be a great photographer, it is not all the time that you can market yourself to clients. Others might even have the dilemma of not knowing how to reach out, be bolder and establish rapport. That being said, photography reps are there to the rescue.
