By Vicki Diaz

It is necessary for a lot of artists to be really expressive especially with the kind of field they are into. The results of their hard work is shown as well as their emotions are let out through masterpieces. It is not a secret that there are a couple of genres and styles that are available for artists to choose from. The mixed media artist is just one of the many ones in the field.

This is the person behind those works in visual arts wherein more than one medium is used. There are a couple of examples that have been created as a representation of this kind. Say for example, a painting or collage wherein bird feathers, seashells and paint are mixed altogether. There is also a specific technique that is commonly applied by painters.

You can mix many materials as you like such as oil, watercolor and acrylic paints. They can be applicable in one single painting. There are also other combinations that you can create based on the things that you want to use. Anything can be done with the use of the imagination of the artists. As long as the materials are available, anything can also be created with ease.

Records have shown that its origins were traced during the late parts when Queen Victoria was still in the throne. That period was known to be around 1870 to 1914. It was also called the Le Belle Epoque. It was a French phrase that means beautiful age or the gilded age when it is translated to English.

The change and experimentation of many materials took place because of some reasons. One of which is the existence of many advances in relation to science and technology. People were also losing their control socially speaking and decided to let go of the conventional styles that they once adapted.

It gave the artists an opportunity to do something beyond the norms. It was another way for them to let out their feelings and thoughts with new techniques. They surely turned the real of arts upside side with those radical changes. Styles that were really progressive were followed suit later on and Impressionism and Art Nouveau were good examples.

Mixed media also saw some added changes in the 20th century. Until now, there are still those painters who always strive hard to look for different ways for them to depict their emotions and beliefs using a variety of things. They also made sure that they do not use old painting tradition. As of now, objects with three dimensions are their favorite subject using several angles.

Meanwhile, you should also know that there is also another kind of variation that an artist can try out. One can combine paint with some type of print media like some drawings made using pen and ink. With the aid of technology, it is easier for them to combine prints with graphics or digital images.

If you talk about the actions performed by a mixed media artist, you can surely make a long list. This is because there are other outlets that artists can do. These forms can be summed up in performing arts consisting poetry, dance and music.
