Looking Inside Serial Killer Minds

By Wanda Vaughn

The type of people who are capable of committing many murders is not a large percentage of the population. However when this crime is committed it immediately attracts a large amount of attention. A lot of people would love to look inside serial killer minds to try to understand why they do these things.

Then there is the question of whether or not it is easy to spot a person who is prepared to kill many times. Although a lot of people would like to think they could identify this kind of killer without too much difficulty, the truth is probably somewhat different. These killers can look and sound just like everyone else.

However this is merely a facade and enables them to stalk their victims without attracting attention. This type of person often lacks empathy and is unable to comprehend how a normal person thinks and feels. They learn how to behave through watching others, and how to manipulate other people through observation.

The act of appearing normal is often just that, and is something they play act at doing well. Killers can often appear to be the kind of people others would like them to be, rather than the people they actually are. It is not unusual to find them in positions where they are able to command the respect of others.

It is not unusual for them to try to gain positions of power, for example within the police force. IF they are unable to do so then they may pretend, even dressing the part. This satisfies them on two points as they will feel powerful, and they will be quickly able to gain the trust of their victims.

Serial killers are psychopaths and their minds work in a completely different way from that of the normal human being. They cannot comprehend it is wrong to kill. They cannot understand why other people cannot comprehend their urge to kill or that it is wrong to take in life simply because they feel like it.

While most normal people will briefly feel like killing someone who may have upset them or subjected them to some sort of trauma they quickly get over these impulses. The ordinary person has learned to control these impulses and has learned the morals that prevent them from taking out their anger and aggression on others. In contrast a psychopath may wish to stop killing but somehow lacks the ability to do so.

People who commit multiple murders are not a new phenomenon. This kind of violent psychopath has been around for centuries but may have had a different name. Humans have been killing other humans since time immemorial under the guise of wars and it could be that at least some of the most famous warriors in history possessed a similar blood lust to that seen in modern day homicides.

Serial killer minds are something that will likely remain a complete mystery to most people. This is probably just as well as a complete understanding of the way they work could be very unpleasant. Nevertheless this thankfully rare breed is likely to continue fascinating the public for the foreseeable future.
