Expand Your Horizons With Music From Around The World

By Rosalind Estes

The mainstream media is often dominated by pop songs created in England or America. Up until recently it has been difficult to gain access to the excellent harmonies born in other regions. Now, with the internet and digital downloads, music from around the world is more freely available than ever before.

People who know what are they looking for can easily search online for work by a particular artist; genre or region. Most bands and musicians now have a their own home page. Usually, their work will be available for download or purchase on their home page.

For those who don`t know exactly what they are looking for but want to be introduced to something fresh and exciting there are a number of websites which collect songs coming out of a wide variety of countries and cultures into one resource. Frequently, they will have daily or weekly features of new songs or videos representing a particular region or artist. Sometimes they will also provide background about the cultural; political or economic forces that make the music what it is. This can deepen the listening experience.

Websites such as these often have a wide range of genres listed alphabetically. Spending just a little time browsing through means you can discover things as diverse as Arab classical; juju or Turkish pop.

Children are not left out in these lyrical adventures. You can also find fun and educational websites aimed at kids. These feature lullabies; children`s songs and nursery rhymes in their original language or in translation.

The arrival of the internet was a boon to both musicians and musical fans. It erased borders and made the blending of genres and styles possible. This means that not only is music from around the world more freely available now than ever before, but that there are also a great many more new hybrids and musical styles to discover!
