It is important to start with its discovery in 1769 by the Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portola to how it was controlled by Mexico and later on when Americans flooded the area in the 1820s. The area then finally became among the first counties of California as it was recognized as a state in 1850. Here is what you need to know about Santa Cruz:
