Massachusetts State Flag History And The Flag Company Inc

By Nichole Smart

Massachusetts, constituent state of the United States of America. It was one of the original 13 states and is one of the 6 New England states lying in the northeastern corner of the country. It is the seventh smallest of the U.S. states in terms of total area.

Boston, the state capital, was a hotbed of activity, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party, during the American Revolution. In addition to its revolutionary spirit, the state is known for sparking the American Industrial Revolution with the growth of textile mills in Lowell, and for its large Irish-American population.

An official Massachusetts flag was adopted in 1901. The design was derived from that of the original naval ensign and did not feature the state's coat of arms. It was used until 1971 when it was replaced with the modern design. A variation on the design was adopted for use as the governor's flag at the same time, but the pine tree remains in use on the modern naval ensign of Massachusetts.

Massachusetts has represented itself with unique flags for far longer than many other states in America, but the Massachusetts flag was not authorized for official use until relatively recently. Massachusetts also stands out as one of only two states to have its own naval ensign in addition to the Massachusetts state flag.

Also within the shield is a white, five-pointed star. The star, which is white on the state flag of Massachusetts, but silver on the state seal, represents the state being one of the first 13 colonies; in fact, Massachusetts was the sixth. The crest that arcs higher up than the shield is an image of a right arm extending from a blue and gold wreath. The gold-colored arm holds a broadsword made of gold.

The tip of the arrow facing downward is a perfect representation of peace and harmony. The radiant white star projects the state of Massachusetts as a part of the 13 original state of the US. The arm with the sword effectively portrays the first half of the state motto. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Massachusetts Flag for the future.
