Malaysia Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Phill Grant

Malaysia is on the Malay Peninsula in southeast Asia. The nation also includes Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo to the east. Its area slightly exceeds that of New Mexico. The ancestors of the people that now inhabit the Malaysian peninsula first migrated to the area between 2500 and 1500 B.C.

The flag of Malaysia is named Jalur Gemilang meaning “Stripes of Excellence” in Malay. It was named in 1997 by the Prime Minister at that time, Tun Dr. Mahathir bin Mohammad, who declared the name as representing Malaysia’s goal to strive for progress and success.

The Malaysian flag was adopted on September 16, 1963. The current Malaysian flag is based on a design adopted in 1950 by the Federation of Malaya, a British protectorate, which would eventually become Malaysia when it gained independence on August 31, 1957.

The traditional royal Malay tiger appeared on a white oval in the center. Some of the larger states resisted federation and maintained their own national symbols, however. After the Japanese occupied the peninsula during World War II, efforts toward unification eventually gained support.

The 14 stripes and points of the star represent the 13 member states of the Malaysian federation and the Federal District of Kuala Lumpur. They represent equal status in the federation of the states and in the federal government. The crescent and star imagery represent Islam, and yellow is a traditional royal color. The blue square stands for unity of the Malaysian people. The blue was originally adopted from the British Union Jack and represented Malaysia's link to Britain.

The flag was further modified to respect the new federal states included in the federation in the form of three additional stripes and three additional points in the star. The current Malayan flag was hoisted on September 16, 1963, for the first time. The flag was derived from the flag of the Federation of Malaya. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Malaysia Flag for the future.
