History Of Liberia Flag

By Barbara Garrow

From the start the republic of Liberia is associated, as its name suggests, with the idea of freedom. The American Colonization Society, founded in 1817, has as its aim the settlement of freed slaves in colonies where they can become self-sufficient. With that purpose in mind agents from the society visit the west African coast south from Freetown, where the British have already established just such a settlement.

During the next twenty years further settlements are established along the coast, until in the 1840s the society concludes that the colony can now stand on its own. In 1847 it is proclaimed an independent republic. It soon wins recognition from most of the great powers.

The Liberian flag was adopted on July 26, 1847, after gaining independence. Liberia was settled by freed American slaves in the early 1800s, naming their country for liberty itself. The country was originally recognized as a colony of the USA. For this reason, the Liberian flag is very similar to the flag of the United States of America.

The banner of Liberia comprises of six red and five white exchanging level stripes that summary the banner. In the upper left-hand corner of the Liberian banner, there is a blue square which has a white five-pointed star in the focal point of it.

The 11 stripes symbolize the 11 signatories of the Liberian declaration of independence. The red and white colors symbolize courage and moral excellence. The white star represents the freedom the ex-slaves were given and the blue square represents the African mainland. The Liberian flag is seen on many ships around the world, as Liberia offers registration under its flag.

The Liberian banner is seen on numerous boats the world over, as Liberia offers enlistment under its banner. Shipping organizations do this to keep away from expenses and confinements that different nations authorize. It is assessed that around 1600 boats fly the Liberian banner as a banner of comfort. This acquires a great part of the nation's income. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Liberia Flag for the future.
